Introducing the New Silverlight Blog
I’d like to introduce myself and the new Silverlight blog where we will provide the latest and greatest information, commentary, and thinking for Silverlight. Here, you will get to hear from the folks who build and market the technology, find useful content, and have an open forum to provide feedback.
I’m Brian Goldfarb and am responsible for our UX Platform and Tools technologies including Silverlight, WPF, ASP.NET, as well the Visual Studio and Expression tools used for building these technologies. Here we will focus on our RIA efforts with Silverlight.
Silverlight, after being on the market for about a year and a half, has made incredible progress as a platform and has enjoyed unparalleled traction in the market. As a team we are incredibly excited about the possibilities of what can be done and what has been done with the technology.
We promised to provide the over 6 million .NET developers worldwide with the most feature-rich, flexible and secure platform for deploying their rich Internet applications (RIAs). The release of Silverlight 2 – which contained a cross-browser, cross-platform subset of the .NET Framework, an advanced set of controls, and cutting-edge features such as Deep Zoom – allowed us to deliver on that promise.
As a result, we've seen unbelievable momentum within the enterprise, design agencies and among a myriad of different SI and ISV partners. Organizations such as AOL, CareerBuilder.com, CBS Sports Online, eBay, Hard Rock, MTV, Renault, Samsung Electronics, The European Commission and Yahoo! Japan are just a few of the organizations that are building cutting edge RIAs using Silverlight.
Silverlight has also been tremendously successful in the media and enterprise video segments thanks to some of our great work delivering our customers the highest quality streaming video (with Smooth Streaming), the ability to scale to unprecedented levels of user demand, industry-leading DRM and unmatched price/performance. Silverlight was used to power compelling media experiences at NBCOlympics.com, the Democratic National Convention, Netflix, Blockbuster, and most recently, the live coverage of the inauguration of President Obama on the official Presidential Inauguration Committee (PIC) Website.
Silverlight 3 will continue this momentum, and bring even more innovation to market. At IAB, we announced that Silverlight 3 will include support for H.264. And at PDC, we announced that Silverlight 3 will contain support for 3D graphics, GPU hardware accelerated effects, improved data-binding support, and more. Stay tuned for several other cool features that we have planned for Silverlight 3, many of which will make their debut this week at Mix.
Because innovation is happening daily and customer momentum is just as fast, we thought it would be helpful to launch a blog where we can provide our customers and partners with more details about specific Silverlight features, news and success stories.
In addition to highlighting Silverlight's successes over time, some of the topics we plan to blog about include:
- H.264 support in Silverlight 3: How will you benefit?
- RIAs and Security
- The Cost Effective Switch from Windows Media Player to Silverlight

Nice post,
Keep up the good work,
Anyway, thanks for the post
Took me time to read all the comments, but I enjoyed the article. Very helpful article! Makes total sense. It's always nice when you can not only be informed, but also entertained! I'm sure you had fun writing this article.
All the comments are dated January 23, 2008, including a comment I made a few minutes ago on April 5, 2009.
Good. The more Silverlight information and guidance, the better. Silverlight 2 is already a productive platform, and version 3 looks like a nice upgrade.
Oops.. can't believe i forgot the most important part, RSS Feed :)
Thanks for the tab-index notes as well.. will implement changes tonight...
The feed 'http://team.silverlight.net/feed/' cannot be parsed with my blog reader. It says there is an error parsing the Cookie header for the URI.
Is there an RSS feed for this blog?
Thanks for this news!!.
Craig, thanks for pointing out the feed url. Be advised that none of the popular browsers (IE, Firefox nor Chrome) are able to autolocate this.
Also, when commenting, tabbing from "website" to "comment" doesnt work. It goes to the top of page. I would suggest an invalid tabindex.
Ontopic: good stuff... :)
Hi SLTeam, When we post comment the date displayed is wrong. Please look in to it.
thanks.
Looking Good. Let's Get it started.
Having a Silverlight Blog is a great idea. I also think that introducing a new feature like 'Featured Section' or 'Submit your article' will help you showcase the articles written by bloggers outside MS. There's some cool stuff written by guys out there and that's a very good way of involving a lot of people and encouraging them. www.asp.net has such a feature and it's a huge hit.
Nevertheless, Silverlight 3 rocks and gives sleepless nights till I try out every new feature of it :)
Suprotim
ASP.NET MVP
This is excellent news Brad. Silverlight 3 is shaping up to be a great release. Keep up the awesome work!
Jonathan, feed is http://team.silverlight.net/feed/. You need auto feed discovery to find it.
@Simone: you can be assured Justin will be a guets blogger -- I introduced my product management team -- it would have been quite the disctionary if we listed everyone who will be helping out! I think Justin may be working on a post now for the next few weeks :)
I've been waiting for this. Great move. Just wanted to let you know your comment form doesn't look very good in IE7 (website input is behind the comment input) and I'm realy looking for an RSS feed, but can't seem to find it.
Greets,
Jonathan
Looking Good Thanks, however, "Website" text box is not visible in this comments part.
Great news, thanks!
How possible? No Justin Angel among the author of this blog? You must be kidding ;)
Looking good! Sorry, I have nothing else to add.
